Gorgeous, antique, ornate, Old Sheffield Plate, imitation or reproduction, with grape and leaf design, circa 1800's. The back is stamped "Sheffield Plate" which indicates it isn't original Old Sheffield Plate. However, there were imitators around the world using similar methods still dating to the 1800s. So, it is difficult to determine if this is an imitation or a reproduction. This solid tray appears to have been made in the tradition of Old Sheffield Plate. It has has a very lovely, traditional design of grapes and leaves around the edge and handles. The grape and leaf layer is folded over the edge of the tray to hide the seams. There are several spots on the face where copper is showing through, but I think it adds to its charm. They aren't as apparent in person as in pictures. Makes a wonderful butlers tray, tea tray, serving tray, centerpiece or just to display.
Measurements: Approx 26" long handle to handle, 22 1/2" without handles and 15" wide.
Marks: Marked Sheffield Plate on the back.
The tray is in good antique condition. Has several dotted areas of the base metal peeking through, which I feel adds to its charm and character. Some typical signs of age and use like light surface scratches. Please see pictures and use the zoom feature for more description. No obvious damage I can see.
